A pulpectomy is a dental procedure commonly performed on children to save a severely decayed or infected primary (baby) tooth. This treatment is similar to a root canal procedure for adult teeth but is adapted for the primary teeth of children. Here’s an overview of the pulpectomy procedure:

Purpose of Pulpectomy :-

The primary goal of a pulpectomy is to remove infected or damaged pulp tissue within the tooth, which includes the nerves and blood vessels, to prevent the spread of infection and maintain the tooth’s function and structure until it is naturally lost.

Indications for Pulpectomy :-

Pulpectomy is typically indicated in the following scenarios:

  • Extensive Tooth Decay: When decay has reached the pulp (the innermost part of the tooth) causing infection or severe pain.
  • Dental Trauma: Injury to a tooth that results in damage to the pulp.
  • Infection: Presence of an abscess or severe infection that affects the tooth pulp.

Procedure Steps

Diagnosis: The dentist conducts a thorough examination, often with X-rays, to assess the extent of decay to determine if a pulpectomy is necessary.

Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding area to ensure the child is comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.

Access and Removal: An opening is made in the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. The infected or damaged pulp tissue is carefully removed using special instruments.

Cleaning and Disinfection: Root canals are thoroughly cleaned to remove bacteria and debris.

Filling: The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material. The pulp chamber is then sealed.

Restoration: The tooth is restored to its normal function and appearance. Most of the cases normal stainless steel crowns are placed to restore lost function of the tooth.

 Pulpotomy:

pulpotomy is to remove the infected or damaged pulp tissue from the crown portion of the tooth, alleviate pain, and preserve the vitality of the remaining healthy pulp tissue
