Dental Crowns : Everything You Need to Know
There are different types of dental crowns used day to day in dentistry most commonly used are:
PFM crowns:
These have a metal base that is coated with ceramic to make them strong as well as natural in appearance; however, recession of gums may lead to exposure of the metal margin over time.
All-ceramic/porcelain crowns:
Porcelain or ceramic materials are used entirely for the manufacture of these crowns giving an excellent aesthetic look like that of natural teeth. They are suitable for front teeth and patients who cannot tolerate metal.
Metal crowns:
Gold or other metal alloys are commonly used to manufacture these types of crowns for their durability and minimal tooth structure removal but they are not ideal when it comes to visible areas because they look metallic.
Zirconia crowns:
Made from zirconia, which is a biocompatible, strong material, these crowns are known for their strength and natural appearance. They are best used on molars and back teeth.
Lithium disilicate crowns:
These are also known as e.max crownsand they are a popular choice in restorative dentistry due to their strength, durability, and aesthetic qualities
Composite resin crowns:
These consist of tooth-colored filling material made from composite resin and generally have less durability than other crown options hence they serve as temporary fixes, especially in pediatric patients.
Temporary Crowns:
Mostly made out of acrylic or stainless steel, these crowns act as placeholders until permanent ones can be made thus protecting the tooth up to the last moment.
